How Often Should You Get Your Teeth Professionally Cleaned?

By Dr. Lynn | GH Goh Dental Surgery, Singapore

One of the most common things I hear from patients is: “I brush twice a day and use floss. Isn’t that enough?”

The short answer is: not quite.

Daily oral hygiene is essential, and if you are doing it consistently, that is genuinely great. But there are things that professional cleaning can do that brushing and flossing simply cannot. In this article, I want to explain the difference, why regular scaling and polishing matters, and how often you should be coming in.

Daily Brushing vs. Professional Cleaning: What Is the Difference?

Your toothbrush and dental floss are excellent tools for removing the soft plaque that forms on your teeth throughout the day. Used consistently and correctly, they keep your mouth in good shape between dental visits.

But here is what they cannot do: certain areas of the mouth are almost impossible to clean thoroughly at home. The space just below the gumline, the tight contact points between teeth, and the backs of the rear molars are places where plaque consistently accumulates in small amounts, no matter how diligently you brush.

When plaque in these areas is not removed, it hardens over time into tartar, also known as calculus. Once tartar forms, it cannot be brushed away. It can only be removed with the specialised instruments used during a professional scaling and polishing appointment.

Tip: Tartar build-up is not a sign that you are brushing poorly. It happens to almost everyone and is simply part of how teeth work.

What Does Scaling and Polishing Actually Involve?

Scaling is the process of removing tartar and hardened plaque deposits from the tooth surfaces, including below the gumline where your brush cannot reach. Polishing follows, smoothing the tooth surfaces to reduce the rate at which plaque re-accumulates and to remove surface staining.

During your visit, we also:

  • Assess the health of your gums and check for early signs of gum disease
  • Look for the early signs of tooth decay before they become larger problems
  • Note any areas of the mouth that may need closer attention
  • Give you personalised advice on your brushing and flossing technique

So a scaling and polishing appointment is not just a clean. It is a comprehensive preventive care visit that lets us catch problems early, when they are straightforward to address.

How Often Should You Come In?

For most patients, I recommend coming in every six months. This frequency gives us the opportunity to remove tartar before it accumulates to the point of causing inflammation, and to monitor your oral health consistently over time.

That said, some patients benefit from more frequent visits. You may need to come in every three to four months if:

  • You have a history of gum disease
  • You smoke
  • You have diabetes
  • You are prone to heavy tartar build-up
  • You are currently wearing fixed orthodontic braces
  • You are pregnant

On the other end, patients with excellent oral hygiene and very low tartar build-up may find that once a year is sufficient. The right frequency for you is something we can determine together based on what we see at your visit.

What Can Regular Cleaning Help Prevent?

Gum Disease

Tartar build-up is one of the primary drivers of gum inflammation. Left unchecked, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more advanced stage of gum disease that causes irreversible damage to the bone and tissue supporting the teeth. Regular cleaning interrupts this process before it reaches that point.

Tooth Decay

Plaque that is not regularly removed produces acids that gradually erode the tooth enamel. Professional cleaning reduces the overall bacterial load in the mouth and gives us the chance to identify vulnerable areas early, before a cavity forms.

Persistent Bad Breath

Bad breath that does not go away despite brushing is often caused by bacteria living in the gum pockets and on the back of the tongue. Scaling removes these bacterial deposits at the source, which is something no amount of mouthwash can replicate.

Surface Staining

Regular consumption of tea, coffee, and other coloured food and drinks gradually stains the outer surface of the teeth. Polishing removes a significant portion of this surface discolouration, leaving the teeth looking noticeably cleaner and brighter.

Why Is This Particularly Important in Singapore?

Singapore’s warm, humid climate provides ideal conditions for oral bacteria to thrive year-round. Combined with a local diet that tends to be high in sugar, refined carbohydrates, and acidic drinks, the risk of plaque accumulation and gum inflammation remains consistently elevated.

In my clinic, I regularly see patients who come in thinking their teeth are fine, only to discover gum issues that have been quietly developing for some time. The earlier we catch these things, the simpler and more comfortable the treatment.

Is the Procedure Uncomfortable?

This is one of the most common questions I get, and the honest answer is: for most patients, no.

scaling and polishing Singapore

The vast majority of people find scaling and polishing entirely comfortable. If your gums are inflamed or particularly sensitive due to tartar build-up, you may feel some mild sensitivity during the procedure. This is temporary and typically resolves quickly afterwards.

One thing worth noting: the longer you leave it between visits, the more tartar there is to remove, and the longer the appointment tends to take. Coming in regularly keeps each visit shorter, easier, and more comfortable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does scaling weaken the teeth?

No. This is a very common misconception. Scaling targets the tartar and plaque deposits on the teeth, not the tooth structure itself. The enamel is not affected by the procedure.

Should children have their teeth professionally cleaned?

Yes. Regular professional cleaning is recommended for children as well. The health of the primary teeth has a direct impact on how the permanent teeth develop, and establishing good dental habits early makes a lasting difference.

How long does an appointment take?

A standard scaling and polishing session typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes. This varies depending on the amount of tartar present and your overall gum health.

Is scaling and polishing covered by CHAS or Medisave?

GH Goh Dental Surgery accepts CHAS, Pioneer Generation, and Merdeka Generation subsidies, and is Medisave accredited. Please contact us directly to find out which subsidies apply to your specific situation.

A Final Word from Dr. Lynn

The best approach to dental health is a preventive one. Regular professional cleaning is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do to protect your teeth and gums in the long term.

Twice a year is a small commitment. But it makes an enormous difference, not just to the appearance of your smile, but to your overall health. Gum disease has been linked to a range of systemic conditions including heart disease and diabetes, which means that looking after your mouth is genuinely part of looking after your whole body.

If you have not had a professional clean in a while, there is no better time than now. Come in, let us take a look, and we will get you on track.

Keep brushing, keep flossing, and never hesitate to reach out.
